Digital reading is not a single behavior; it spans skimming, studying, and reference loops, each with distinct cognitive demands. Typography mediates these demands by shaping perceptual span, saccade landing positions, and the ease of lexical access. This article synthesizes a 2024–2026 research arc examining variable fonts, optical sizing, and microtypographic adjustments across phones, tablets, and large desktop canvases. We report delayed post-tests, cloze-probe accuracy, and eye-movement metrics from multisession protocols. The headline result is conservative but actionable: well-parameterized type systems improve retention of gist and detail without lengthening reading time, particularly for long-form explanatory content and legally consequential disclosures.

Limitations and open questions
Font familiarity confounds novelty effects; we rotated superfamilies and included warm-up paragraphs. Open questions include individual differences in crowding susceptibility, interactions with dyslexia-friendly face preferences, and the ethics of micro-optimizing terms-of-service comprehension without simplifying substance—a reminder that typography cannot redeem unfair terms.
Statistical texture: effect sizes practitioners should expect
Across Study A’s delayed tests, item-level gains clustered in the small-to-medium range when expressed as standardized mean differences—substantive for product teams because they accumulate across millions of reads, yet humbling for anyone expecting typography to substitute for clear writing. The more striking pattern was heterogeneity: participants who self-reported frequent mobile news reading benefited most, perhaps because their baseline skimming strategies were re-tuned by improved letter statistics rather than because novices suddenly became scholars.
Bayesian hierarchical models suggested that line length × optical sizing interactions matter: narrow columns with overly tight tracking negated optical corrections. This is a systems lesson—typography is a vector, not a knob.

Legal, compliance, and support teams rarely participate in type reviews; they should. When retention on clauses rises, downstream ticket volume often falls—not always dramatically, but monotonically in our disclosure arm.
