Definition: Notification Entropy

Notification entropy describes the unpredictability of when, where, and with what valence incoming demands will arrive across digital channels. High entropy environments are characterized by heterogeneous alert sources (messages, calendars, workflow pings, human @-mentions), irregular timing, and incomplete preview information—forcing workers into frequent prospective monitoring: a low-level vigilance state “just in case.”

Entropy, in this sense, is not merely “many notifications.” Two steady, predictable signals can be less disruptive than one irregular signal with high stakes. The psychological injury comes from uncertainty: the inability to model the next interruption, which prevents deep stabilizing rhythms of attention.
